At Wyndora Avenue in Freshwater, the pool sat in a frame of worn concrete pavers, blue mosaic tile and a stacked-stone wall that had all dated together. Out front, plain concrete paths cut the lawn into pieces, and the garden beds were thin strips along the house, with no shape and no privacy from the street. The brief was to modernise both, front and back, with an aged European feel tying them together.
Out the back, we lifted the old pavers and coping and relaid the pool surround and side path in Valencia Aged Taupe limestone, set in a stretcher bond. The pool was retiled throughout in Fairy Bower mosaic, and a new water feature replaced the old stacked-stone wall.
The old shower screen made way for a vertical Spotted Gum batten screen on a black frame, with a new outdoor shower built into it: exposed copper fittings, a copper shower dish and a stainless drain in the paving.
At the front, the concrete came out and the same limestone now runs as a 1.2m path from the street to the front door. A rendered garden box runs along the western boundary, so the planting gives privacy from day one. Lower beds edged in Cor-ten steel, run along the fences, and a curved bed softens the corner of the house. Stepping stones in decomposed granite lead down the side.
The clients wanted the whole property to feel like it belonged together. That’s what we built.
