The house had been cared for. The garden hadn’t kept pace with it.
At Wyuna Avenue in Freshwater, a kidney-bean pool sat in the middle of the back lawn, a relic of another era, ringed by terracotta pavers, with an overgrown planted island inside it and a pergola that had stopped doing its job. The front garden had never been resolved.
The clients, a young family, wanted somewhere they’d actually live: a lawn big enough for the kids to run on, an entertaining space that worked year-round, and a pool that belonged to the garden rather than dominating it. We worked through a full concept design with them before any work began.
The old pool came out and a clean rectangular one went in along the western boundary, handing the centre of the yard back to the lawn. A Spotted Gum deck with an integrated pergola draws the house outward, with wide steps down onto the grass. Frameless glass fencing keeps the garden reading as one space, and limestone paving, stepping stones through the lawn and lush subtropical beds tie it together. A tropical outdoor shower with copper fittings sits beside the pool.
At the front, a white picket fence, masonry entry pillars, a cobblestone driveway and Cor-ten edged beds gave the street edge the finish it had always lacked.
The clients wanted a garden that finally matched their home. That’s what we built.
